2023 updated: Hong Kong Document of Identity for visa purposes holders are now eligible to apply Vietnam visa on arrival

In the past two years, the visa on arrival has not been opened, and the holders of the Hong Kong Visa Identity (HKDI) cannot use the approval letter to go to the airport in Vietnam. How can a Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) holder obtain a Vietnam visa?

Previously, holders of the Hong Kong SAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes could obtain a Vietnam visa in the following ways:

Option 1: Apply for a Vietnam visa at the Consulate General of Vietnam in Hong Kong. If the holder of the HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa is currently living in Hong Kong, you can contact the Consulate General of Vietnam in Hong Kong to apply for a Vietnam visa to enter Vietnam. If the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Document of Identity holder is currently living and working abroad, you can go directly to the Vietnamese embassy near your place of residence to apply for a visa.

Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) holders need to contact the Consul General of Vietnam in Hong Kong for information on application, processing time and visa application fees.

Option 2: Apply for a Vietnam visa on arrival. This method is relatively convenient for Hong Kong visa identity document holders. You just register online, fill in the required information, then you will get the approval letter and wait for a stamp to be stamped in your passport when you arrive at the airport in Vietnam. Visa on arrival is exactly a visa that can only be applied through a travel agency, you cannot go to the Vietnamese embassy/consulate to apply for a Vietnam visa. This type of visa is very convenient for many countries that cannot apply for an electronic visa. You just apply online through your travel agency, and the steps to get an approval letter are very simple. At present, only a 1-month single-entry visa is provided, and other types such as 1-month multiple-entry and 3-month multiple-entry are not available yet.

What documents are required for Vietnam visa on arrival?

 To enter Vietnam, in addition to the visa, Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) holders need to ensure the following conditions:

  • A visa identity document valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry to Vietnam,
  • Document of Identity for Visa with at least 2 blank pages,
  • Passport scan (clear, color, not black and white),
  • Documents from the airline confirming your booking (including return tickets),
  • A document from the hotel that confirms your booking.

Also, you should prepare Form NA1 (Visa Application Form) in advance. If you enter Vietnam with a visa on arrival, you must fill in all the information on the NA1 form when you arrive at the airport, so in order to save time, you should print out the NA1 form and fill in the information before arriving at the Vietnam airport.

How do Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) holders apply for visa on arrival online?

Here are the steps to apply for a visa on arrival online:

Step 1: Visit the page: https://www.visa-vietnam.hk/apply/, select your nationality.

Step 2: Fill in all the information, such as: visa type (visa on arrival), entry date, exit date, etc. In the Processing time box, select when you want to get your Vietnam visa.

Step 3: Upload the passport scan, hotel reservation confirmation, and round-trip air ticket confirmation.

Step 4: In the payment step, you can pay by credit card, debit card or PayPal.

After completing the steps above, you will receive an email confirming that your application is complete. We will send the approval letter to you within 7 working days via the email you provided. When you receive this document, print it out and use this document to get stamps at Vietnam airports. Finally, when you arrive at the Vietnam airport, please line up at the “Visa Arrival Counter” counter and wait for the airport staff to stamp your passport. The stamp fee is $25.
