Tho Xuan has served civil flights for more than 10 years, and passenger numbers have gone beyond what its terminal was built for. Under national airport planning, it is designated as an international airport and as a backup for Noi Bai. The plan, reported by VnEconomy in December 2024, includes:

• renovating Terminal T1 for about 1.5 million passengers a year;
• building a new international Terminal T2 for about 3.5 million passengers a year;
• expanding the apron to 16 aircraft stands, for a total capacity of about 5 million passengers a year by 2030.

Until the new international terminal is built, international flights at Tho Xuan remain occasional charters.

What to expect at immigration on a charter to Tho Xuan

• One flight, one big queue. Your charter is usually the only international flight, and all passengers, often tour groups, reach passport control at the same time.
• The visa counter comes first. Travellers with a visa on arrival, and Chinese e-passport holders collecting a loose-leaf visa, stop at the landing visa counter before passport control.
• A small terminal. The current terminal was built mainly for domestic traffic, and passenger numbers have already gone beyond its design capacity, so the hall fills quickly when a full flight arrives.
• Late arrivals. Charters often land in the evening or at night, and the drive to Sam Son or Thanh Hoa city still lies ahead.

Do you need Tho Xuan airport fast track?

On an international charter, fast track is worth booking if:

• you need a visa on arrival or a loose-leaf visa;
• you travel with older relatives or young children;
• you want to be out before the tour groups on your flight;
• you land late and still have about an hour’s drive to your hotel.

2. Visa counter, if needed. Then we help you at the landing visa counter. You pay the USD 25 stamping fee in cash.
3. Priority lane. After that, we take you through passport control.
4. Baggage and customs (VIP). Finally, we help you at the baggage belt and through customs.

However, no package includes the visa itself, the USD 25 government stamping fee for a visa on arrival, photo fees or transport.
