Australian Passport Holder: Vietnam E-Visa Still in Processing and You Leave Soon?

Australian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and many apply for the e-visa only a week or two before they fly. If your Australian passport is waiting on a Vietnam e-visa still in processing, the first thing to check is not the clock but the website you used. Searches in Australia for the “official” Vietnam e-visa website have risen sharply this year, because look-alike sites are easy to land on. Once you know where your application really is, you can decide whether to wait or speed it up.
We are a private visa service, not the Vietnamese or Australian government. Vietnam Immigration makes every visa decision.
Check 1: did you apply on the official portal?
The Vietnam e-visa portal’s FAQ names only two official addresses: evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn. Also, the government fee there is USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| You paid USD 25 or 50 on evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn and have a registration code | You applied directly. Check the status on the official search page |
| You paid a much higher amount to another website | You used an agency. Its order number is not a government registration code. Ask that agency for your code and status first |
| You cannot find any registration code | We cannot speed up an application without it. Look in your email, or apply again |
Check 2: count the days in Vietnam working hours
From October to early April, Sydney and Melbourne are on daylight saving time, 4 hours ahead of Vietnam. Brisbane is 3 hours ahead and Perth 1 hour ahead. Vietnam Immigration and our team count working days Monday to Friday in Vietnam.
| Vietnam time (Monday) | Sydney / Melbourne (AEDT) | Brisbane (AEST) | Perth (AWST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:00, working day starts | 12:00 | 11:00 | 09:00 |
| 12:00, morning working session ends | 16:00 | 15:00 | 13:00 |
| 18:00, afternoon working session ends | 22:00 | 21:00 | 19:00 |

In practice: a Monday morning in Sydney is still before the Vietnamese working day begins. If you fly on Monday, plan for the result by Friday afternoon Vietnam time.
Check 3: your passport and entry airport
First, Vietnam generally requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months. Australia’s Smartraveller advice tells travellers to make sure they have the correct visa before arriving and to ask a Vietnamese embassy or consulate when unsure. In addition, check that the airport in your application, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Nang, is where you will land.
E-visa in processing: options for Australian passport holders
- Flight 4 or more working days away: wait and check daily.
- Flight 1 to 3 working days away: speed up your existing application with our expedite service.
- Flight within 24 hours: choose the 2- or 4-working-hour option, if a slot is still open in Vietnam today.
- Wrong details, or no registration code: make a new reviewed application.
The expedite service needs your registration code, email, date of birth, entry date and entry port, and charges no second government fee. Speed-ups run Monday to Friday, Vietnam time: 8 working hours for USD 145 (order before 08:00, result by 18:30), 4 working hours for USD 175 (order before 08:00 for a result by 12:30, or before 14:00 for 18:30) and 2 working hours for USD 200 (order before 08:00, 10:00, 14:00 or 15:00). If we miss that time, we refund the amount we received. For the full price table, see the main guide for e-visas in processing. Our Vietnam e-visa guide for Australians covers the application itself.
Before you land, read our Vietnam entry procedure guide (step by step from the aircraft to the arrivals hall) and our Vietnam customs rules guide (duty-free allowance, cash limits and banned items).
